I can't use my Outlook Express e-mail addresses in Outlook

Source of the problem

You've been using Outlook Express, and now you've added Outlook 2000 to the same machine. Your long list of e-mail addresses is in Outlook Express, and you need to get them into Outlook.

If you're using Outlook in the Internet Mail Only configuration, you can set the Outlook Express Address Book to share all your Contacts folders with Outlook. But if you're using Outlook in the Corporate/Workgroup configuration, you can't share contacts; instead, you must import the Outlook Express addresses into Outlook.

How to fix it

In Outlook, Corporate/Workgroup configuration

1. On the File menu, click Import And Export.
2. In the first wizard step, click Import Internet Mail And Addresses, and then click Next.
3. In the second wizard step, click Outlook Express. Select the Import Address Book check box to import your e-mail addresses and contact information.
4. You can also import existing e-mail in the Outlook Express Inbox, and any Rules you might have created to control mail flow in Outlook Express, by selecting the check boxes for the items you want to import.
5. Click Next and follow the rest of the steps in the wizard to finish importing your addresses.

I don't know how to import my e-mail addresses from Netscape Messenger

Source of the problem

You've been using Netscape Messenger, and that's where all your contacts and e-mail addresses are stored. Now that you're using Outlook (or Outlook Express), you don't want to reenter all that data--there must be an easier way to get your contacts and e-mail addresses into Outlook (or Outlook Express).

You're in luck--Microsoft anticipated your problem and made it easy to import Netscape Messenger contacts into Outlook or Outlook Express.

How to fix it

1. On the File menu, click Import And Export.
2. In the first wizard step, click Import Internet Mail And Addresses, and then click Next.
3. In the second wizard step, click the appropriate version of Netscape.
4. Select the Import Address Book check box to import your e-mail addresses and contact information.
5. You can also import existing e-mail in Netscape by selecting the Import Mail check box.
6. Click Next and follow the rest of the steps in the wizard to finish importing your addresses.

How to fix it

1. On the File menu, point to Import, and click Other Address Book.
2. In the Address Book Import Tool dialog box, click your version of Netscape.
3. Click Import and follow the rest of the wizard steps to finish importing your addresses.

I can't import my WordPerfect mail-merge list into Outlook

Source of the problem

You have a sizable list of contacts built up in WordPerfect, and you want to import all this information into Outlook (or Outlook Express). But in Outlook's Import And Export Wizard (and in Outlook Express), there's no provision for importing addresses directly from WordPerfect.

The solution is to use a text file as an intermediary file type between WordPerfect and Outlook (or Outlook Express). First, consult your WordPerfect documentation to save or export your address book as a text file (Comma Separated Values), and then follow the steps in the next sections to import the new text file into Outlook or Outlook Express.

How to fix it

1. On the File menu, click Import And Export.
2. In the first wizard step, click Import From Another Program Or File, and click Next.
3. In the second wizard step, click the text file type into which you saved or exported your WordPerfect addresses, and follow the wizard steps to import the addresses into Outlook.

How to fix it

1. On the File menu, point to Import, and click Other Address Book.
2. In the Address Book Import Tool dialog box, click Text File (Comma Separated Values).
3. Click Import and follow the rest of the wizard steps to finish importing your addresses.

I can't import my Comma Separated Values text file into Outlook

Source of the problem

You exported or saved your contacts from another program as a Comma Separated Values (.csv) text file, and when you import it into Outlook, you don't see the individual fields listed in the Map Custom Fields dialog box. Instead, all the imported fields are in a single row, separated by small box characters. Even in a text file, formatting can be not quite readable by the importing program, but that's a problem you can fix. If you open the text file in Microsoft Excel, the Text Import Wizard reformats the file so that Outlook can read it. You can then use Excel to save the file, in either Comma Separated Values or Tab Separated Values format, and import that file into Outlook.

How to fix it

First, open the text file in Microsoft Excel. Next, save the file in Excel as a text file type. Finally, import the resaved file into Outlook.

1. Open the text file in Excel:
   1. In Excel, on the File menu, click Open.
   2. Navigate to the text file and click Open.
   3. If the Text Import Wizard opens, click Finish.
2. Resave the file as a text file type:
   1. In Excel, on the File menu, click Save As.
   2. In the Save As Type box, click Text (Tab Delimited) (.txt), and then click Save. If you're asked whether you want to keep this format, click Yes.
   3. Close the text file and quit Excel.
3. Now, import the resaved text file into Outlook.
