SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft IDE controller driver always selects PIO for tape drives, and this behavior cannot be changed by a user or a program.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

This behavior is by design. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

PIO requires the host (computer) to coordinate every input/output transaction. With DMA, devices can communicate directly to each other by using the controller, and this process requires less overhead than PIO. You can overcome this design limitation by applying the hotfix that is described in this article.
