PRB: Default Health Monitor Default Configuration Missing (305131)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000

This article was previously published under Q305131

SYMPTOMS

When you open the Health Monitor Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, you may observe that some or all Health Monitor actions, data collectors, or groups that are created by Application Center 2000 installation are missing.

CAUSE

You may have accidentally deleted an action, group, or monitor or you applied Application Center 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a system that did not have Health Monitor installed on it. (See "More Information.")

RESOLUTION

To recreate the default configuration of Health Monitor:
  1. Set up the default configuration by running the following command line from the directory where Application Center is installed:

    Mofcomp acsdefaultpolicies.mof

  2. Adjust the path to AC.exe (the Application Center command line tool) by running:

    <Application Center installation path> ActionSetup.exe

MORE INFORMATION

Application Center 2000 Setup by default installs Health Monitor (HM) 2.1 and a set of default monitors and associated actions. Those monitors are defined in an .mof text file, Acsdefaultpolicies.mof.

Because Health Monitor needs the path to AC.exe in order to properly call "take member online" and "take member offline" actions, Application Center Setup invokes the custom action ActionSetup.exe to correctly set up the ExecutablePath property of the CommandLineEventConsumer instances that represent these actions in the HM WMI namespace.

Application Center Service Pack 1 does not run Mofcomp on Acsdefaultpolicies.mof, nor does it run Actionsetup.exe. This behavior is necessary to preserve your existing custom Health Monitor configuration.

If you apply Application Center SP1 to a system that does not have Health Monitor 2.1 installed, SP1 will install an updated version of Health Monitor 2.1. Note, however, that SP1 does not create the same default Health Monitor configuration normally installed by Application Center 2000 Setup. See the "Resolution" section of this article if you want to recreate the default HM configuration in this case.
