SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Compass to log on to a Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) server, you may receive the following error message:
Your name was not properly recognized by any server. You may choose a server manually.
NOTE: This message means that the Compass client did not receive notification that the user ID was recognized when it used its broadcast mechanism to locate an MMS server.

CAUSE

The Compass client broadcasts on port 389, and you cannot configure this. The Compass client broadcasts the user login ID and expects an MMS server to reply (within 5 seconds) that the ID has been found within its database. The timeout value can be exceeded if one or more of the following conditions exist:
  • The local MMS servers are not listening on port 389.
  • The login ID was not found within the databases of the MMS servers that responded to the broadcast.
  • There are no MMS servers within the broadcast range.
A requirement of the automatic login function is that the target MMS server must be on the same segment as the Compass client. The broadcast mechanism is cannot be routed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure your network or MMS so that the following conditions do not exist:
  • The local MMS servers are not listening on port 389.
  • The login ID was not found within the databases of the MMS servers that responded to the broadcast.
  • There are no MMS servers within the broadcast range.
IMPORTANT: In many cases, this may not be practical or possible. For example, this may not be possible if your MMS Server is running additional services that require the use of port 389. If your MMS configuration is not able to use the preceding fixes and you would like to suppress the error message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article:
  1. Start the Compass Client.
  2. In the Logon dialog box, click to select the Select Server Manually check box. After you do so, when you log on to the server, you are prompted to choose the MMS server from the Servers dialog box.
