SYMPTOMS

When you try to set the Index this attribute in the Active Directory option in the Attribute Properties dialog box in Schema Manager, you may receive the following error message:
The indexing status could not be changed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the requirements for Schema modification have not been met. To modify the schema, the following conditions must exist:
  • The Schema Master FSMO role holder for the forest must be accessible.
  • You must be a member of the Schema administrators group.
  • The Schema Updates Allowed registry value must be set to 0x1 on the Schema Master FSMO role holder.
