This article was previously published under Q304887 SYMPTOMS
When you run SAP R/3 on a Windows 2000-based server that has been started with the /3GB switch in effect, some of the SAP processes may peg the CPU and not terminate. Because of the nature of SAP, the occurrence of this behavior on one server may also negatively affect remote servers, making it necessary to restart those servers also.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if there is not enough virtual address space reserved to manage all of the potential non-direct working-set entries. Starting the server with the /3GB switch is more likely to expose this behavior because starting the server with the /3GB switch limits the memory that is available for the hash table of the process's working set that the operating system maintains.
