FIX: First Message Stuck in Queue After Registering an SMTP Service Event (304885)

SYMPTOMS

After you register or unregister an SMTP Service Event Sink, the first message sent after the change remains in the Messages waiting to be routed queue. Subsequent messages are delivered successfully.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, right-click the Messages waiting to be routed queue and click Force Connection.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create an SMTP Service Event Handler.
  2. Register the event with the SMTP Server.
  3. Test your event by sending an e-mail. The e-mail is not delivered.
  4. Open the Exchange System Manager and browse to the "First Administrative Group", "Servers", "Server Name", "Protocols", "SMTP" folder.
  5. Expand the SMTP virtual server and locate the Messages waiting to be routed queue. Note that Connection State is Retry and Total Number of Msgs is 1.
  6. Send another e-mail. Note that this second e-mail is delivered.
  7. The first e-mail remains in the Messages waiting to be routed queue until you right-click the queue and then click Force Connection.
