SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a Windows 95- or Windows 98-based computer to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message every time you start the computer:
CTSvcCDA.exe Instruction at "0x77f91b79" referenced memory @ "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
After the error message, you can start the computer to Windows 2000, and everything appears to function correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Windows 2000 tries to run the CTSvcCDA.exe program, which Windows 95 and Windows 98 use at startup to load the Creative Services for CD-ROM Access service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, set the Startup type to Disabled for the Creative Services for CD-ROM Access service:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  3. Right-click Creative Services for CD-ROM Access, and then click Properties.
  4. In the Startup type box, click Disabled, and then click OK.
