64-Bit Programs Have Higher Priority on 64-Bit Computers for File Extension Activation (304771)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
- Microsoft Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition
This article was previously published under Q304771 SYMPTOMS When an administrator deploys a 32-bit program (by using
file extension activation through Software Installation policies) and also
deploys a 64-bit application by using file extension activation, the end user
always receives the 64-bit program if the end user is on a 64-bit computer.
CAUSE This behavior occurs because even if the administrator
explicitly sets the 32-bit program as first in the list for that extension in
the application deployment editor, the 64-bit program still has priority over
the 32-bit program. 64-bit programs are going to always be preferred over
32-bit programs for file extension activation on a 64-bit computer.
STATUSThis
behavior is by design.
