Problems After You Install Two Different Versions of the Same Program on One Computer (304750)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q304750 SYMPTOMS
If there are two different versions of the same program in an environment, and the two program versions are installed on the same computer, either or both of the program versions may not work correctly.
Example
Two versions of program X are installed on the same computer. Version 1.0 and 2.0 of program X are both deployed in a domain.
- User one installs program X version 1.0, and then logs off.
- User two installs program X version 2.0, and then logs off.
- User one logs on. User one's program could be in an unstable state because both programs might share files in the Windows\System32 folder, or both programs may have been installed into the same folder in the Program Files folder.
STATUSThis behavior is by design.MORE INFORMATION
If the programs are deployed as upgrades and the users are in the same scope of management, the upgrades should be deployed as force upgrades so that both users will always have the same version.
If the users are not in the same scope of management, different versions of the program should not be deployed in such a manner that one computer could receive two versions of the same program.
