Signed Device Driver May Appear as Not Signed in Device Manager (304641)

SYMPTOMS

If you remove a device that has a digitally-signed driver from Device Manager and then click Refresh to enumerate the device again, the driver may appear as Not Signed on the Driver Tab in the device properties.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Digital Signer entry is not correctly updated in Device Manager until you restart Device Manager.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, quit and then restart Device Manager to update the Digital Signer entry.

To determine if a driver is digitally signed, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Look at the device properties in Device Manager:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click the device you want to view, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Driver tab. View the Digital Signer entry to identify whether or not the driver is digitally signed.

Method 2

Click Start, click Run, type sigverif.exe, and then press ENTER to view digital signature details about all of your operating system-related files.
