PRB: When You Attempt to Install Visual Studio, You Cannot Stop Oracle Services as Necessary (304604)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio, Enterprise Edition 6.0

This article was previously published under Q304604

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Visual Studio 6.0 and Oracle is installed on your computer, you may be unable to rename the Oracle directory or stop Oracle services to continue with the installation.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the third-party program BMC Patrol is installed on your computer. BMC Patrol is a service-monitoring program for client computers; it restarts Oracle after you disable it, and therefore prevents you from renaming the Oracle directory as required.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, physically disconnect the local computer from the network (preferred), or stop the BMC Patrol service through the Service Manager.

On Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP-based systems, you have the option to press F8 to boot into Safe mode during the black and white boot screen. If you choose to do this, select the Safe Mode option, not Safe Mode with Networking.

MORE INFORMATION

BMC Patrol is a third-party server software program, designed to ensure that named services or programs on client computers are not stopped or otherwise disabled.

The third-party products that are discussed in this article are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.
