Controlling UDP Packet Fragmentation in Windows Media Encoder (304513)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q304513

SYMPTOMS

When you stream live or on-demand content from Windows Media server, you may see UDP packet fragmentation.

RESOLUTION

To eliminate packet fragmentation in most cases, follow these steps prior to encoding:
  1. Open a session in Windows Media Encoder.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.
  3. In the session properties, click the Advanced tab, and then change the Default Windows Media packet size to 1377 or lower.
  4. Save your session.
NOTE: This setting only controls video packets, and is not capable of controlling audio packets. If the audio bitrate is set to 64Kbps or higher, UDP packet fragmentation still occurs. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

UDP packet fragmentation is controlled within the encoder, not at the media server.
