OFFXP: Error Message When You Upgrade from Office 2000 SR-1: Error 2735 OPC Remove (304501)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade your Microsoft Office 2000-based computer to Microsoft Office XP, you may receive an error message similar to the following
Error 2735 OPC Remove.
and you are unable to install Office XP.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Office 2000 installation contains damaged files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove Office 2000, and then install Office XP. To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the Add Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Office 2000 version, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box that appears, click Remove Office.

    You receive the following message:

    Are you sure you want to remove Microsoft Office 2000?

  6. Click Yes.

    Office 2000 is removed.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Insert the Microsoft Office XP Upgrade compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

    Office XP Setup starts.
  10. When you are prompted for a product to upgrade, insert your Office 2000 compact disc into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then direct Office XP Setup to the location of your Office 2000 compact disc.
  11. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the installation of Office XP.
