PCMCIA Cards May Not Be Enumerated Quickly with O2Micro Controller (304496)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert your R2 (Release 2) PCMCIA card into a CardBus controller slot, it may take between 15 and 20 seconds before the insertion sound is played and the device is displayed in the Unplug or Eject Hardware tool.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are using an O2Micro 0Z68XX PC Card controller where XX is additional digits. The O2Micro 0Z68XX controller may be unable to immediately determine the correct voltage for the R2 card. It may cycle between 3.3 and 5 volts 14-15 times before it can determine the proper voltage.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue does not seem to have any adverse effects on computer performance other than the initial delay of 15-20 seconds. It is not known whether a 3.3 volt R2 card could eventually be damaged during this process, so if you observe this behavior, consult with the PCMCIA Card manufacturer regarding support of this specific O2Micro CardBus controller.
