ACC2000: Print Command on Custom Menu Causes Object to Be Printed Immediately Without Showing Print Dialog Box (304391)

SUMMARY

When you create a custom menu bar or toolbar, if you use the Print command from the Commands tab in the Customize dialog box, the button's behavior will be different from the Print command on the built-in File menu.

The Print command on the built-in File menu displays a dialog box in which you can select which printer to print to, how many pages to print, and so on. The Print command from the Commands tab in the Customize Toolbar dialog box, however, causes the object to be printed without displaying a dialog box.

To work around this behavior, copy the Print command from the built-in File menu to the custom toolbar or menu bar.

To copy the Print command from the built-in File menu to the custom toolbar or menu bar, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Access, and then open your database.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Customize to display the Customize dialog box.
  3. On the Toolbars tab, make sure that the Menu Bar check box is selected, and that the check box for your custom toolbar is also selected so that both are visible on the screen.

    NOTE: if you are unable to click the check box for the menu bar, click Properties and enable all the check boxes.
  4. Click the File menu of the menu bar to drop down its list of menu commands.
  5. Click the Print command, and note that it is highlighted with a black rectangle around it.
  6. IMPORTANT: For the next step, dragging the Print command from the built-in File menu without holding down the CTRL key will move the Print command onto your custom toolbar; it will no longer be available on the built-in File menu, so be sure to hold down the CTRL key while performing the next step.

    Hold down the CTRL key, and then drag the Print command from the File menu to your custom toolbar. This creates a copy of the Print command from the File menu on your custom toolbar.
  7. Click Close to close the Customize dialog box.
When you click the Print command that you just copied, the built-in Access Printer dialog box appears. This has been verified to work in both retail Access and run-time Access applications.
