This article was previously published under Q304285

SYMPTOMS

When Windows 2000 internal clients try to log on to your Windows 2000 domain, the logon process takes longer than expected. This delay may be 20 minutes or more.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the client computer's TCP/IP settings are configured to point to an external DNS server or other DNS server that does not host the Windows 2000 domain that the clients are trying to log on to.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure internal clients to point to the DNS server for the Windows 2000 domain which they are trying to log on to:
  1. Gather the DNS settings for the Windows 2000 domain DNS server that you want to log on to. If you do not know this information, contact your network administrator.
  2. Open the Properties page for the network adapter that you use to connect to the network. To do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
    2. Double-click your network adapter.
  3. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. On the General tab, type the DNS server information from step 1.
