Slow-Link Detection Does Not Work in a Windows NT 4.0 Domain with Roaming Profiles (304102)

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based domain environment, logging on to your Windows 2000-based computer may take a long time over a slow link if you are using roaming profiles.

CAUSE

Slow-link detection does not work under the indicated conditions because the socket provider is not initialized. If the computer is a member of a Windows 2000-based domain, the socket provider is initialized before the link speed is detected during calls that invoke Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
