SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional on a computer that has Microsoft Office 2000 Standard, Professional, Premium,or Small Business Edition (SBE) installed, you may receive the following error message when you try to start Microsoft Outlook 2000:
Your operating system has been upgraded from a Win9x to a newer version of Windows. Outlook must configure itself to run with this version of Windows.
When you try to configure Outlook 2000, you receive a request to insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove and then reinstall Outlook 2000 by either of the following methods:

By Using Utilities

  1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation.

For additional information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

290301 Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    3. Click OK, and then click Exit.

Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.
  2. Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM in the drive, and then follow the installation instructions.
  3. Restart the computer, and then start and configure Outlook.

By Using Registry Editor

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add/Remove Programs, click Office 2000, Small Business Edition, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Click Remove Office, and then follow the instructions for removing the program.
  4. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  5. For each of the following registry keys, locate the key, click Edit, click Delete , and then click Yes:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\OfficeGUID

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Products\OfficeGUID

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Installer\Products\Office GUID

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Office GUID

  6. Locate the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer

  7. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type a file name, and then click Save.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
  9. Quit Registry Editor.
  10. In Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following folders:

    hard disk drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

    hard disk drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery

    hard disk drive:\Windows\Msagent

  11. Run the Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility for Microsoft Office CD1 (Eraser2000.exe) or the Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility for Microsoft Office CD2 (Eraser2000a.exe), and then restart the computer.

  1. On the computer with Windows 95 and Office 2000, uninstall Office with the command line: msiexec /x {Product Code of the Office SKU}
  2. Upgrade to Windows 2000.
