Err Msg: STOP: Cannot CreateNetLib or Cannot Find DirectInput Functions (303914)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft MechCommander 2.0 or Microsoft Links 2001 on a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, you may receive any of the following error messages:
Cannot find DirectInput functions.

-or-

STOP: Cannot CreateNetLib - Startup -Error: - 2147221499.

-or-

STOP: Cannot create netlib-startup-error 80040005 (nlerr_cantcreated pobject) address: 0x004fe9f2 location startup networking C

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one of the following is true:
  • You have chosen not to restart your computer before you start the game for the first time.
  • DirectX did not install correctly on your system.

RESOLUTION

Step 1: Download the Latest version of DirectX

Visit the following Microsoft Web site to download the latest version of DirectX:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/8/1/a81adbcd-3212-4cb7-b02a-183eee612bbf/dx90a_redist.exe

Important Download Instructions
  1. Click the download link, and then click Save or Save this program to disk to copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time (recommended), click OK (if available).
  2. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  3. When the download is complete, install DirectX in Safe Mode.

Step 2: Restart Your Computer in Safe Mode to Install DirectX

  1. Restart the computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after the computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then click to select Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
  2. When you see the Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition startup menu, press 3 for Safe Mode.

    Note Windows will start in Safe Mode. The words "Safe Mode" will appear in all four corners of the screen.
  3. Click OK. In Windows Millennium Edition, close the Help and Support dialog box.
  4. On the desktop, double-click the DirectX folder.
  5. Double-click DXSetup.exe. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall DirectX.
  6. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click OK.
  7. Test the game.
