This article was previously published under Q303813

SYMPTOMS

When you add Web sites to your Favorites list, the new favorites are not displayed after you quit and restart Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5 for Macintosh.

You may also receive the following error message:
The disk cannot be found

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The name of your hard drive includes any of the following characters:
    ! " % & ( ) + - , . / : ; < > = ? @ [ ] _ |

  • You are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5 for the Macintosh.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, either upgrade to Internet Explorer 5 Macintosh Edition, or rename your hard drive using alpha-numeric characters (A-Z, 0-9).

If you rename your hard drive, do not use the following characters:
! " % & ( ) + - , . / : ; < > = ? @ [ ] _ |

To rename the hard drive, follow these steps:
  1. Click the name below the hard drive icon once to select it.

The name should appear in a highlighted text box.
  2. Type the name that you want to use (for example, type Macintosh HD), and then press the Return key.
NOTE: You may be unable to rename the hard drive if the computer is currently connected to a network, or if you have File Sharing enabled. Temporarily turn off File Sharing and disconnect the computer from the network. For more information about this procedure, see the "More Information" section of this article.
