This step-by-step guide describes how to install Network Load Balancing (NLB) if it has been uninstalled.

You can use NLB to spread incoming requests across as many as 32 servers. This lets you expand enterprise-wide services, such as Web servers, Terminal Services, and streaming media servers, and still ensure that the servers will respond quickly, even under heavy loads.

NLB automatically detects if a server stops working and quickly reassigns client traffic among the remaining servers. This safeguard can help you provide uninterrupted service for your critical business programs.

How to install NLB if it was uninstalled

Use this procedure to install NLB if it was previously uninstalled. Repeat these steps on each host that is to be used in your NLB cluster.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click the local area connection on which NLB is to be installed, and then click Properties. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears.
2. Click Install. The Select Network Component Type dialog box appears.
3. Click Service, and then click Add. The Select Network Service dialog box appears.
4. Click Network Load Balancing, and then click OK. After NLB is installed, you are returned automatically to the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
5. Click Network Load Balancing, and then click Properties. The Network Load Balancing Properties dialog box appears.
6. On the Cluster Parameters tab, configure you cluster operations using information from the installation checklist.
7. After you have finished, click OK.

You complete the installation by setting up TCP/IP for NLB. There are different procedures for single or multiple network adapters.

To set up TCP/IP for NLB on a single network adapter

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
2. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
3. In IP Address box, type the address you entered as the dedicated IP address in the Network Load Balancing Properties dialog box under Host Parameters. If the correct address is already present, leave the address at it is.
4. In the Subnet Mask box, type the subnet mask and default gateway information for your TCP/IP network.
5. Click Advanced, and then click Add.
6. Type the cluster IP address in the space for the IP address, followed by the appropriate subnet mask, and, if necessary, the default gateway. This IP address corresponds to the cluster's primary IP address that you typed in the Network Load Balancing Properties dialog box under Cluster Parameters.
7. If you need to configure additional virtual IP addresses for your cluster (for example, if you are running a multihomed Web server), do so in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box.

To set up TCP/IP for NLB with multiple network adapters

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click the local area connection where NLB is installed, and then click Properties.
3. Click Network Load Balancing and then click Properties.
4. On the Cluster tab, type the virtual IP address in the Primary IP Address box, add the appropriate subnet mask, and then click OK.
   
   Note You do not need to type the IP address of the internal network adapter in the Dedicated IP Address box on the Host Parameters tab.
5. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
6. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the virtual IP address.Properties.
   
   Note You can configure additional virtual IP addresses for your cluster if you need to. For example, if you are running a multihomed Web server. To do this, click Advanced, click Add, and then type additional virtual IP addresses for this network adapter and provide other information as necessary.
7. Click OK, and then click OK.
