Incorrect file name in the File Open or File Save dialog boxes (303750)

SYMPTOMS

When trying to open or save a file in Internet Explorer version 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer version 6, you may see an incorrect file name in either the File Open or File Save dialog box, and you may not be able to open or save the file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the File Open and File Save dialog boxes use the file name from the Internet Explorer Address bar instead of that actual file name that is specified in the Content-Disposition header.

RESOLUTION

Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2

Obtain and install the patch that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, and then follow the steps that are listed after this article link:

To force the Content-Disposition file name to appear in the File Open and File Save dialog boxes, install the patch, and then follow these steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: UseCDFileName
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Hexadecimal
    Value data: 1

  4. Quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.
