Document Property Changes in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 (303733)

SYMPTOMS

If you use a Windows NT 4.0-based workstation and you are assigned only Print permissions to either a local or network print queue, you cannot modify the default document properties. Any changes to these properties that are made on the Windows NT-based server are pushed down to the client. This behavior has changed in Windows 2000.

Windows NT 4.0

On Windows NT 4.0-based computers, if you have only Print permissions, you cannot modify the properties for the default document. Print permissions are the default permissions for a typical user. The default document properties are set on the server; any changes to these settings that are made on the server are pushed down to the client.

Windows 2000

The Windows NT 4.0 document defaults have been replaced with Printing Preferences settings on Windows 2000-based computers. These settings are set on a per-client basis. Changes to these settings on the server are not pushed down to the client. The functionality to push these settings down to the client does not exist in Windows 2000. You can set some properties on the server that are pushed down to the client.

Set Printing Defaults for a Network Printer

To create a set of printer properties that all clients that are connected to that printer default to:
  1. On the taskbar, click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer for which you want to set the default printing preferences, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Printing Defaults.
  4. By using the Layout tab, the Paper/Quality tab, and the Advanced button, specify the default printer settings.
The changes that you make are reflected on print clients that connect. Also, this functionality will not work with the Internet Printer Protocol (IPP) printing protocol.
