Designating a Default Domain

The default domain is used to stamp messages from addresses that do not have a domain. A Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) virtual server can have one default domain that cannot be deleted.

To name a default domain, you can use the name that is specified on the DNS tab for the TCP/IP protocol in the Network tool in Control Panel. This domain name is also used for all other services. Or, you can specify a unique domain to serve as the default for the Microsoft SMTP service only.

To designate a default domain:
  1. Expand the SMTP virtual server, and then click Domains.
  2. Right-click a domain name in the Details pane, and then click Set as Default.

Configuring an Alias Domain

You can set up alias domains that use the same settings as the default domain. Messages that are received by the SMTP service for the alias domain are placed in the Drop folder that is designated for the default domain.

To configure an alias domain:
  1. Expand the SMTP virtual server, right-click Domains, point to New, and then click Domain. The New Domain Wizard starts.
  2. In the New Domain Wizard, click Local, and then click Next.
  3. Type a name for the alias domain, and then click Finish.

Designating a Drop Folder

For the default domain, you must identify a folder in which to drop all incoming messages. The SMTP service places messages for alias domains in the Drop folder that is used for the default domain.

You can designate any folder as the Drop folder, if the folder is a local folder on the computer for the SMTP service and is not already assigned as the Pickup folder. By default, this is a subfolder of the SMTP Mailroot folder.

To designate a Drop folder:
  1. In the Details pane, right-click the default domain, and then click Properties.
  2. In the Drop directory box, type the folder that is used to drop all incoming messages. The default location is Inetpub\Mailroot\Drop. Or, click Browse, and then choose the folder. Make sure that you choose the Drop folder, not the Pickup folder.
