The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)

This article was previously published under Q303467
BUG #: 352981 (SHILOH_BUGS)

SYMPTOMS

An unattended installation of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 may fail with no errors reported, except in the installation log, where the following error message appears:
A previous program installation created pending file operations. You must restart the computer before running setup.
The installation log is the Sqlsp.log file, which is created in the WINNT directory. You should always check the Sqlsp.log file and the Setup.log file to determine whether an unattended setup completed successfully or to get additional information about the cause of a failed setup. An unattended installation of SQL Server 2000 does not provide any graphical feedback of success, failure, or of installation progress.

CAUSE

An application was installed after SQL Server 2000 was installed, which created pending file operations. The pending file operations can only be completed after the computer is restarted.

WORKAROUND

Restart the computer, and then re-run the installation of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

If an attended installation of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 is performed, and there are pending file operations, a dialog box opens that displays the following:
A previous program installation created pending file operations on the installation machine. You must restart the computer before running setup.
The setup cannot continue until the computer is restarted.
