When you try to add or modify objects in Active Directory, the following error message might occur:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Rebooting the server corrects the problem.
CAUSE
If a user account is locked out, a handle leak occurs if that user was logged on to a computer before the lockout and attempts to change the password. Repeated attempts to change the password when the account is locked out causes the symptom that is described earlier in this article when the handle leak exceeds 2048 handles.
You can track the handle count only by using a debugger or a user dump.
