Microsoft Message Queuing endlessly loops at startup (303405)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Message Queuing 2.0

This article was previously published under Q303405

SYMPTOMS

If you start Microsoft Message Queuing, also known as MSMQ, offline, it endlessly loops.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because, during startup, Message Queuing mistakenly determines that messages with Direct=OS: format names that use the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) do not belong on your computer. Message Queuing trys to forward these messages to another computer.

Note The period of time that Message Queuing takes to start correlates to the volume of messages that it must go through to build queue lists. If there are a lot of files in the Message Queuing\Storage directory, Message Queuing can appear to be stuck in a loop when it is going through typical startup procedures.

RESOLUTION

This issue has been resolved in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3). In Windows 2000 SP3 and later, the FQDN is correctly checked against the network basic input/output system (netBIOS) name. Message Queuing correctly places the messages in the queue on your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
