SUMMARY

This article describes how to manually configure your SBS server and clients for static IP addresses. By default, Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 enables the Microsoft DHCP Server service. If you configure client computers by using an SBS Client Setup disk, the client operating system is automatically configured to use DHCP. In some cases, you may want to use static IP addressing rather than DHCP-assigned addresses.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, SBS 2000 uses the 192.168.16.0 network, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (class C). If you are unsure which IP addresses to use, assign client computers a unique IP address between 192.168.16.11 and 192.168.16.254, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If you are unsure which IP address to use on the SBS 2000 server, use 192.168.168.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and leave the default gateway entry blank.

To configure SBS to not be a DHCP server, first use the following steps to stop and disable the DHCP Server service:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, click Services, right-click DHCP Server and then click Stop.
  2. Double-click DHCP server. On the General tab, click Disabled in the Startup type box, and then click OK.
NOTE: If your SBS 2000 server is acting as a RAS server for dial-up or VPN connections, you must create a static IP address pool in the Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) MMC. Refer to the RRAS online Help for instructions about how to configure a static IP address pool.

To assign static IP addresses to client computers, follow the steps for the appropriate client computer operating system:

Windows 2000 Professional

  1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  2. Right-click the network connection for your network adapter, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the appropriate values in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway boxes.

NOTE: In most cases, you should type the IP address of the SBS computer's internal (non-Internet) network adapter for the Default Gateway value.
  5. Click Use the following DNS server addresses.
  6. In Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the primary and secondary DNS server addresses. In most cases, this is the internal IP address of your SBS server.
  7. Click Advanced, click the WINS tab, click Add, and then type the internal IP address of your SBS server in the WINS server box.
  8. Click Add, click OK, click OK, and then click OK.

Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Protocols tab, click TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties.
  3. On the IP Address tab, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the appropriate boxes.
  4. Click the WINS Address tab, and then type the internal IP address of your SBS server in both the Primary WINS Server and Secondary WINS Server boxes.
  5. Click the DNS tab. Leave the Host Name setting at its default (the same as your computer's NetBIOS name). In the Domain box, type the name for your Active Directory domain. Under DNS Service Search Order, click Add, and then type the IP address of your SBS server's internal network adapter.
  6. Click Add, and then click OK.

Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition

  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Configuration tab, click the TCP/IP entry for your network adapter, and then click Properties.
  3. On the IP Address tab, click Specify an IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the appropriate boxes.
  4. Click the WINS Configuration tab, and then click Enable WINS Resolution. Type the internal IP address of your SBS server in the WINS Server Search Order box.
  5. Click the DNS Configuration tab, and then click Enable DNS. Type the NetBIOS name of your client computer in the Host box, and then type the Active Directory DNS name in the Domain box. Type the IP address of the internal network adapter of your SBS server in the DNS Server Search Order box, and then click Add.
  6. Click OK, and then click OK. Restart your computer.
