WD2001: The Computer Stops Responding at "Optimizing Fonts" Phase of Word Startup (303262)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q303262

SYMPTOMS

When you start Word, Word may stop responding (hang) at the splash screen, while Word is optimizing fonts.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a damaged font is present in the System folder's Fonts folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, check for a damaged font. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all active programs.
  2. Open the System folder, and then move the Fonts folder to the desktop.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Start Word.
If the problem no longer occurs after you move the fonts to a folder on the desktop, a font is causing Word 2001 to stop responding. To locate the font that causes this behavior, use the process of elimination. One at a time, drag fonts from the folder on the desktop to the System Fonts folder, and then restart the computer to test for the behavior. Keep track of which fonts you move, and test fonts until the behavior occurs again.

After you locate the font that is causing the behavior, drag the font to the folder on the desktop, and then drag any remaining fonts from the folder on the desktop back to the System Fonts folder.
