SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, the mouse is installed, but no mouse pointer appears as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when there are invalid characters in the System.ini file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type system.ini, and then click Find Now.
  3. When the search is complete, double-click System.ini.

    System.ini opens as a Notepad file.
  4. Note the two lines of square or box-like characters (similar to the WingDing font). Press DELETE or BACKSPACE to remove these two lines.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. Close System.ini.
  7. Restart your computer.
