XADM: Error Message: There Is No Such Object on the Server (303148)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q303148

SYMPTOMS

When you configure the Active Directory Connector (ADC) and a Recipient Connection Agreement, you may receive the following error message:
There is no such object on the server.
Facility: Win32
ID no: 80072030
Microsoft Active Directory Connector Management
This error message occurs after you click Add under the From Exchange tab in the ADC, you type your credentials, and then click OK. You cannot browse your Exchange Server 5.5 directory for the specific container from which ADC imports.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because ADC uses the first part of the name of the particular server you type in the Connections tab under the Exchange Server Information to search the Exchange Server 5.5 directory for that object. For example, if the network basic input and output system (NetBIOS) name is Exchange and you have a duplicate record in your Domain Name Server (DNS) for the Exchange Server computer as mail.company.com, and you type mail.company.com as the Exchange Server 5.5, it resolves to the correct IP, but does not locate the object.

The ADC performs a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) lookup in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory for a server object named "Mail" instead of a server named "Exchange". If you ping the server by name, as well as connect and bind to the server with Lightweight Directory Protocol (LDP), the function works correctly. However, the ADC does not respond because the process ADC uses to look up the name of the server by using LDAP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, type the NetBIOS resolvable name or DNS short name of the server in the Exchange Server Information Server box in the ADC under the Connection tab. You can also use the DNS name if the first part of the DNS name of the server is the actual NetBIOS name of the server. It may be necessary to add a record of the actual NetBIOS name to your hosts file or to your local DNS server that the server that runs ADC is directed to.
