Windows does not restart after you install Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings or Age of Mythology (303117)

SYMPTOMS When you restart your computer after you install Microsoft
Age of Empires II or Microsoft Age of Mythology, you experience one of the
following symptoms:
CAUSE This issue may occur if either one of the following
conditions is true:
- The Microsoft Windows Registry is damaged.
- An antivirus program is running when you install Microsoft
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings or Age of Mythology.
RESOLUTION To work around this issue, restore a backup of the Windows
Registry, and then remove and reinstall Age of Empires II. To do this, follow
these steps:
- Insert a Windows 98 Startup disk, and then start your
computer to a command prompt.
- At the command prompt, type C:, and
then press ENTER.
- Type CD\Windows\Command, and then
press ENTER.
- Type Scanreg /restore, and then
press ENTER.
Microsoft Registry Checker starts. - Use the ARROW keys to select a CAB file to restore
from.
Note Select a CAB file that is closest to, but that is earlier than,
the date that you installed Age of Empires II. - Press ENTER.
The backup of the registry is
restored. - Remove the Windows 98 Startup disk, and then press
ENTER.
The computer restarts. - Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to quit all programs that are
running. Click the program that you want to quit, and then click End
Task.
Note If you receive a message that states that the program is busy or
not responding, click End Task again.
Repeat this step until you have quit all the programs that are
running except Microsoft Windows Explorer and Systray. Remove Age of Kings and Age of MythologyRemove Age of Empires II, and then delete the game folder. To do
this, follow these steps:
- Insert the game CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent
the program from starting automatically.
- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove
Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click
Age of Empires II or click Age of Mythology,
and then click Add/Remove.
Follow the directions that
appear on the screen to remove the game. - Delete the game folder. By default, most Microsoft games
are installed in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games - Reinstall Age of Kings or Age of Mythology.
- Restart your computer.
