"WMPLAYER Caused a Stack Fault" Error Message When You Attempt to Play an Audio CD-ROM (303097)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an audio CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
WMPLAYER caused a stack fault in module WMPCORE.DLL at 0167:521475f5.
-or-

When you start Windows Media Player with an audio CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
WMPLAYER caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff9f92d.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Windows Media Player with the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, remove Windows Media Player 7, and then reinstall it without the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Windows Media Player 7.1 on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. In the Windows Media Component Setup dialog box, click Remove Windows Media components, and then click Next.
  6. In the Components list, click to select all of the component check boxes, and then click Next.
  7. Click Next to remove all of the selected components, and then click Finish.

    The computer restarts.
  8. Rename all of the following Windows Media Player files:

    wmplibrary_v_0_12.db
    wmp.PNF
    wmpscheme.xml
    wmp.inf
    wmploc.dll
    wmplayer.exe
    wmp.ocx
    wmpcore.dll
    wmpui.dll
    wmpcd.dll
    wmplenc.dll

    To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Find: All Files dialog box, type wmp*.* in the Named box.
    3. In the Look in list, click drive C (assuming Windows is installed on drive C), and then click Find Now.
    4. In the list of found files, right-click the file that you want, and then click Rename on the shortcut menu.
    5. Rename the file extension of each of the Windows Media Player files to .old. For example, rename wmplibrary_v_0_12.db to wmplibrary_v_0_12.old. If you receive a message to confirm the file name extension change, click Yes.

      NOTE: Some of the Windows Media Player files in the preceding list may not be present on the computer.
  9. Reinstall Windows Media Player without the Adaptec CD-Burner Plug-in:
    1. Start Windows Media Player Setup.
    2. In the Windows Media Component Setup dialog box, click Next.
    3. Click to select the I have read the Privacy Statement check box, and then click Next.
    4. In the Components list, click to clear the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in check box, and then click Next.

      NOTE: If Adaptec CD-Burning software is present on the computer, the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in check box does not appear. In this case, ignore this step.
    5. Click Next twice, and then click Finish. Restart the computer.
