Cdir_ln.exe Generates an Exception When It Processes Foreign User Deletions (303064)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2 SP1

This article was previously published under Q303064

SYMPTOMS

The following error message is logged in the Zscript.log file when foreign users are deleted by using the Lotus Notes management agent (MA). Note that logging must be set to level 1 or higher to see this error message:
Updating Foreign Users

More details are given in the discovery/update file log

Start of the Notes discovery/update process
Update of foreign users requested
Deleting object CN=A Schanen/o=mymail [mymail,dc=microsoft,dc=com] %Schanen , A
LoadDocument = CN=A Schanen/o=mymail [mymail,dc=microsoft,dc=com]
A Schanen [mymail,dc=Microsoft,dc=com]
Deleting object CN=Adam Zimmerman/o=mymail [mymail,dc=microsoft,dc=com]
%Zimmerman , Adam

The cdir raised an exception and has terminated.

Update of the Foreign Users failed
In this example, the first record for "A Schanen" is successfully deleted. The exception is generated when an attempt is made to log the deletion for "Adam Zimmerman."

CAUSE

The problem occurs when a Notes name is logged to the Zscript.log file during a delete operation for foreign users. The name that is being logged must include a "%z" string. See the "More Information" section in this article for additional information.

WORKAROUND

The only work around for this problem is to operate the MA at logging level 0. This prevents all attempts to log the names of the deleted objects.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In test results to date, the "%Z" (or "%z") character combination always causes the exception to occur, even in a single-record export file. However, any other character combination ("%a" through "%z") may cause the exception to occur. An exception is not generated if an object that has a similar distinguished name is added as a foreign user through the export file. Using the example in this article, "Adam Zimmerman" would be successfully created and successfully logged in the Zscript.log file. The creation of the export file would be unaffected in this case.
