The Fax Printer Component May Not Be Created During the Mini-Setup Process (302954)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q302954

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Windows 2000 image on a computer that does not have a modem, and the Microsoft System Preparation (Sysprep) tool is used to duplicate that image on a computer that has a modem, the Fax Printer component may not be created.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, reinstall the modem driver:
  1. Remove the modem driver from Device Manager.
  2. Scan for hardware changes to re-install the same modem driver.
  3. Configure the Fax Printer component, and ensure that it works.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000 has been designed to create the Fax Printer component whenever one of the following two scenarios occurs:
  • When a modem is detected by means of a device installer that operates in a subordinate or partnership role, and not during Windows 2000 Setup.
  • When the Fax component is installed by means of the Optional Component Manager (OCM) and a modem is detected during Windows 2000 Setup.
During Mini-Setup, OCM does not start, and the Fax Printer component is not created.
