Computer Runs Very Slow After Upgrade to Windows 98 from Windows 95 (302952)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to Microsoft Windows 98, you may experience symptoms similar to the following:
  • Your computer's performance is unusually slow.
  • Your mouse operates erratically.
  • You cannot start programs from the Start menu.
  • Your computer stops responding (hangs), and you receive an error message similar to the following:
    Em_exec.exe caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll

CAUSE

This behavior can occur in the following situation:
  • You have installed a Logitech MouseWare mouse on your Windows 95-based computer.

    -and-
  • You upgrade your computer to Windows 98.
This behavior can occur when the Event Macro Executive (Em_exec.exe) utility is loaded when Windows 98 starts.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Turn off the Event Macro Executive (Em_exec.exe) utility. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. In the System Configuration utility, click to clear the EM_EXEC check box on the Startup tab, click Apply, and then click OK.
  4. Click Yes to restart your computer.

Method 2

Uninstall Logitech MouseWare. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Logitech MouseWare and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions to completely remove Logitech MouseWare from your computer.
