SYMPTOMS

Because of issues with Distributed File System (DFS) and Offline Folders, a hotfix has been created to provide the ability to disable the Make files Available Offline command on the shortcut menu when a user right-clicks a file or folder on a DFS share.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To enable this functionality, edit the registry as follows:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: NoDfsEnabled
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Hexadecimal
    Value data: 0x1

  4. Quit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

In a Windows 2000-based DFS environment you can prevent a share from being made available offline by opening the share's properties, clicking Cache, and then clearing the check box to make files available offline. You cannot do this in a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based environment, so you must use the hotfix in this situation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
