SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or Professional and not joined to a domain, Office 2000 migration runs for each user on the system as they log on and start a program such as Outlook. In Outlook, the following message appears:

You computer has been upgraded from Windows 95 or Windows 98 to a later version of Windows. Outlook must configure itself for this version of Windows.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Install Office 2000 on a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition computer.
  2. Upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition or Professional (not joined to a domain).
  3. Create three test user accounts.
  4. From each account, run Outlook.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Office 2000 migration runs on each user account. This is by design of the Microsoft Office 2000 Suite.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, insert the Microsoft Office 2000 CD when you are prompted to.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office needs to update information for each user. It is recommended that you keep the original installation CD handy for instances like this that may occur on such a Windows XP system.
