SYMPTOMS

In Internet Explorer, if a Privacy Preferences (.xml) file is imported without a "p3pCookiePolicy" element that specifies zone="Internet", the Privacy tab may incorrectly display "Custom (Advanced or imported settings)" as its setting.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box, and then reopen the Internet Options dialog box to make the slider available again. You can also click Default to return the slider, but that step resets your privacy settings for the Internet zone to "Medium", which can make you set your privacy settings back to the level they had been before you imported the settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the slider, the privacy preferences that you specify on the Privacy tab on the Internet Options dialog box affect only the Internet zone.
