SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install any version of Microsoft Office 2000, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
This program must be installed to run.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have installed and then removed Microsoft Works but the registry keys from Microsoft Works are still installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Browse to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products
    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products

  4. Right-click each subkey that begins with the digits "904," and then click Delete on the shortcut menu.

    When the confirmation message appears, click Yes.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.
