SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install America Online (AOL) 5.0, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C001539A

Rundll32 caused a GPF in module user.exe at 0010:00001276

CAUSE

This error can occur when an AOL adapter has been installed on your computer, even though AOL is not installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System.
  4. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.
  5. Click View devices by connection.
  6. In the device list, click AOL Adapter, and then click Remove.

    When the confirmation message appears, click OK.
  7. Repeat step 6 for each of the following devices:
    • AOL Dial-Up Adapter
    • Dial-Up Adapter
    • Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
  8. Restart your computer in Normal mode and install AOL.
