Windows Media Player Displays Message that Files Will Not Fit (302712)

SYMPTOMS

After you write (or "burn") files to a CD-ROM or send files to a portable device, Windows Media Player may display a "will not fit" message in the status column of each file.

CAUSE

The Windows Media Device Manager helps to run the Copy to CD or Device pane in Windows Media Player. This pane is the interface to transfer media to both CD-ROM recordable drives and various portable devices. Windows Media Player refreshes the file status after any type of transfer. This behavior is necessary when subsequent transfers of media occur on the same device without disconnecting it.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The message may be misleading because the files have already been successfully written to the CD-ROM or portable device. Windows Media Player refreshes the file status and will report that the file "will not fit" which means that the file is too large to fit on the CD-ROM or device. The status column does not display this message with files that are small enough to be copied.
