Cannot Enter Standby Mode During a Critical Process (302517)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
This article was previously published under Q302517 SYMPTOMS If you are working in the console of a Windows Windows
Server 2003-based computer while someone is logged into a remote desktop
session at the same time and you attempt to enter Standby mode, you computer
may not enter Standby mode. Instead, you may receive a "preparing for standby"
message for a few seconds, and then the log on screen may return.
CAUSE This behavior can occur if your computer is currently
occupied with a sensitive or critical activity such as creating (burning) a
CD-ROM. As a safety feature, Windows Windows Server 2003 prevents the use of
Standby mode if it will interrupt a critical process. STATUS This behavior is by design.
