SYMPTOMS

You have to set up your mouse properties each time that you start your computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when Point32.exe is not running as a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Turn on Point32.exe in the Startup Group

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type Regedt32, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: Pointer
    Data type: String Value
    Value data: Point32.exe

  4. Quit Registry Editor.
NOTE: Use Regedit.exe in Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

Add Shortcut to Point32.exe in the Startup Group

  1. Locate and create a shortcut to Point32.exe from the hard drive.
  2. To move the Shortcut to Point32.exe in the Startup folder:
    1. Right-click on the Shortcut to Point32.exe file, and click Cut.
    2. Right-click on the Start menu, and click Explorer.
    3. Click the plus sign to expand out the Programs folder.
    4. Right-click on the Startup folder, and then click Paste.
  3. Close Windows Explorer.

Edit Win.ini

  1. Start the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe). To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type Msconfig, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Win.ini tab.
  3. Click to select the [windows] folder, and then click New.
  4. Type the following line, and then press ENTER:

    Load = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Point32.exe

    NOTE: Use the correct location of Point32.exe in your computer.

  5. Click OK to quit the System Configuration Utility.
