"Add operation failed" error message when you add the Office .msi file to a new Group Policy Object in Windows 2000 (302471)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a Microsoft Office .msi file to a new Group Policy Object (GPO) in Microsoft Windows 2000, the following or similar error message may appear:
Add operation failed. Unable to extract deployment information from the package. Run validation on the package to ensure the package is correct. The GPO cannot be created.

CAUSE

This error can occur if Office 2000 is installed on the computer where you are creating the GPO. This problem can also occur if the version of Office 2000 that is installed on the computer that is being used to create the GPO is not the same version as the computer the GPO is being created for.

RESOLUTION

To avoid the error, ensure that Office is not installed on your computer before you attempt to create a GPO.
