Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Access 97, the following error message may appear:
Unable to find language DLL

CAUSE

This error message can appear
  • if the Msain800.dll file is not in the same folder as the Msaccess.exe file,
  • if there are discrepancies between the versions of .dll files that are installed and the version of Msaccess.exe, or
  • if the Msaccess.exe file is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this error message, perform the following procedures, all of which concern the Msaccess.exe file:
  1. Verify that the Msain800.dll file is located in the same folder as the Msaccess.exe file. The default folder for these two files is Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office.
  2. Use the Find Files or Folders utility to search for any earlier version of the Msaccess.exe file that may be installed on your computer. If you find any earlier version of the Msaccess.exe file, remove the version of Microsoft Office that is associated with the file, and then reinstall Office 97.
  3. Compare the version of your Msaccess.exe file with the Access release information:
    1. In the Search Results pane under Find Files or Folders, right-click the file, and then click Properties.
    2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Version tab, and then view the information. The following table shows the correct Access version information for each release.
      Access ReleaseMsaccess.exe Version
      Original Release8.0.0.3512
      Service Release 1 (SR-1)8.0.0.4122
      Service Release 2 (SR-2)8.0.0.5903

  4. If you are trying to start Access by using a desktop shortcut, make sure that the shortcut points to the correct version of the Msaccess.exe file and that the correct path is associated with Access file types.
  5. If none of the preceding procedures resolves the error message, rename the Msaccess.exe file or move it to another folder, and then reinstall Office 97 Professional and any service updates that you have applied. Reinstallation replaces the existing copy of the file and updates the file to the correct version for the service release that is installed.
