Customized Screen Saver Settings from Earlier Versions of Windows Do Not Migrate (302086)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q302086

SYMPTOMS

If you use the new Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP to upgrade from one of the following operating systems to Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
a customized screen saver does not transfer, even though the selection of the screen saver does transfer.

For example, if you are using the 3D Text screen saver on an old computer with text that you customized from the default, and then you use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer information to the new Windows XP-based computer, the selection of the 3D Text screen saver transfers, but the customized text does not.

CAUSE

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is not designed to transfer this customized text.

RESOLUTION

The only workaround that exists for this behavior is to write down the customized text from the screen saver on the old computer, and then re-type it manually on the new Windows XP-based computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
