FIX: Merge Agent Fails with Access Violation in Replprov.dll if Publication has Horizontal Partitioning (301936)

SYMPTOMS

During the process of merging changes between the Publisher and the Subscriber, the Merge Agent may fail with an Access Violation (AV) if the publication has horizontal partitioning.

CAUSE

The generation list is being set to NULL after a retry, thus causing the Access Violation to occur.

The Merge Agent goes into a retry mode when it fails to connect to the Publisher due to a bad network connection, times out applying generations, or experiences blocking.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
