SUMMARY

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the metabase. Before you edit the metabase, verify that you have a backup copy that you can restore if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, see the "Configuration Backup/Restore" Help topic in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

Application Center 2000 enables NetBIOS over TCP (NetBt) support on all management (back-end) network adapters (NICs) of cluster servers when you use Network Load Balancing (NLB) for load balancing. If you use NLB and you do not want to have NetBt support turned on on these adapters, follow the procedure in the "More Information" section of this article.

NOTE: When you turn off NetBt support on NLB clusters, you may experience periods of unstable cluster operation if DNS name resolution for the backend adapters fails or if the IP address of any backend adapter is changed. If you turn off NetBt resolution, and then experience cluster connectivity issues, you may be asked to manually enter all management NIC IP addresses in the host file on each cluster server.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you edit the metabase incorrectly, you can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall any product that uses the metabase. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result if you incorrectly edit the metabase can be solved. Edit the metabase at your own risk.

NOTE: Always back up the metabase before you edit it.

To turn off NetBt, follow these steps:
  1. At a command prompt, type the following:

mdutil set /AppCenter/Cluster -prop 57445 -value 0 -dtype dword -utype 200
  2. When Mdutil is finished, you must restart the ACNameRes service. To do this, in Administrative Tools, click Services, right-click Application Center Name Resolution Service, and then click Restart.
When ACNameRes has restarted, you can turn off NetBt support and Application Center will not turn it on again.

NOTE: Mdutil.exe is located in the Support folder on your Application Center 2000 installation media.
